"Benny, come here," April said, and Benny wondered absently why she was whispering. He didn't ask the question, though, simply walked over to the window to see just what she was looking at. She grabbed his shirt and pulled him close to her, leaning so that his cheek was against hers and pointing to something on a ledge on the outside of the building, just past the window.
"Look. A pair of birds made a nest there," she whispered, and as she spoke a little gray and white bird fluttered down into the nest, settling in it comfortably. April grinned.
"Uh-huh," Benny said slowly. "Birds do that..."
April gave him a faintly annoyed look and then shoved him playfully away. "Oh, fine, I can tell you're not interested. I'll look at the pretty birds all by myself."
"It's just a bird," he offered, a little helplessly, and April gave him a faintly pitying look, like she thought him worthy of pity somehow, for not seeing whatever it was she saw.
