fanfic100 prompt #34. And for a
speed_rent challenge, but I missed the deadline.
Disclaimer: Rent is not mine, none of the characters are mine. We've been over this.
The first time Benny kissed Mark, it was in their dorm room at Brown. Mark had made some teasing comment, nothing unusual for them, but enough to prompt Benny to tackle him playfully, pin him against the bed while Mark laughed and tried to shove him off, though he gave up soon. Benny froze as he realized how close his face was to Mark's, and after a moment leaned down to him with careful deliberation, still pinning Mark by his wrists, to press his lips to Mark's. Before long, he'd forgotten completely what Mark had said in the first place.
The first time he kissed Maureen, it was in that pathetic, rundown apartment he and Mark shared after college, before the loft. They were both already half in love with her – she was amazing, intoxicating, and who wouldn't love her? And although she'd come home with Mark, even though Mark was right there when she did, when Maureen kissed him all Benny could do was close his eyes and lean into her, hesitantly reaching to pull her closer, and all he could think of was how much softer than Mark she was, and at the same time how much fiercer.
The first time he kissed Alison, it was at the bus stop, waiting for her bus after their first date. He'd meant to kiss her on the cheek – something about Alison called for that sort of politeness and reserve – and Alison smiled and reached up to wrap her hand delicately around the back of his neck, turned her head and really kissed him. It was different from kissing Mark or Maureen, and he was glad of that, but nevertheless, though he'd left Mark and Maureen, he couldn't ignore the inexplicable guilt, kissing this woman who was like neither of them.
Kissing Mimi now, for the first time, isn't like any of that, and he's certain that's just as well, because if she reminded him of any of those kisses, it would only hurt – it wouldn't be enough to make up for what he'd given up. She's fishing her keys out of her pocket, at the door of her apartment, when she turns to kiss him. Maybe her kiss is soft and fierce, but she's nothing like Maureen, she's not hesitant and cautious like Mark, and he doesn't feel the least bit guilty. For once, he doesn't feel anything at all.
