“You really love her, don’t you?”

Maureen looked down self-consciously, smoothing an imaginary crease out of the spotless white wedding gown. White silk, form-fitting, no veil… She looked sexy as hell. Then again… it was Maureen. “I’m marrying her, aren’t I?”

“That’s not what I asked.”

She sighed. “Damn it, Benny, don’t do this. Please… don’t.”

He watched her silently for a moment, his gaze unwavering. “Do you?” he asked at last.

“Yes, of course I do!” She sighed again and turned away from him, pacing across the small room. It amazed him that she could pace without tripping over the train of her gown, but somehow she managed it gracefully. Quieter, she repeated, “Of course I do. Don’t make me sorry I invited you, okay? Just because we’re friends now…”

He followed her a few steps and touched her arm lightly. “More than friends, I would think.”

Maureen closed her eyes for a moment, and when she opened them she met his eyes, though she didn’t pull her arm away. “You’re married, Benny,” she said softly, as if he might have forgotten. “And soon I’m going to be. You can’t… We can’t…”

She stopped upon hearing a knock on the door to the room, and Joanne’s voice called, “Honeybear, are you ready yet?”

Maureen glanced to the door. “Just about. Don’t come in.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t want you to see me in my dress yet.”

On the other side of the door, Joanne chuckled. “Alright, just don’t take all day.”

“I won’t, Pookie.” Maureen looked back up at Benny. “Look… I love you. As a brother, a friend… but it can’t be anything else. Not anymore. You understand.”

He looked down, and grimaced a little. “Of course, babe.”

She smiled a little sadly. “Thank you.” After a second, she leaned forward to kiss him gently, a long, lingering kiss—the kind of kiss you gave when you knew it would be the last.

When she finally pulled away, Benny took a moment to catch his breath, and then forced a little smile. “So. You think you’re ready to face the world as Mrs. Johnson?”

Maureen bit her lower lip for a second, and then smiled up at him brightly enough to break his heart. “Yeah. I think so.”
